Public Engagement
Our public engagement event - Neurotheatre - is a 'live' performance of brain surgery that is happening in front of you, but it's not a real skull!
Inspired by Mr Mark Wilson, consultant neurosurgeon in London, Neurotheatre is a theatrical lecture in which we follow a patient from injury to recovery. First we are shown by emergency rescue services how to deal with a head injury and then we let neurosurgeons show us how they open a skull and remove blood collecting in the head (extradural haematoma). We have hosted this event three times so far and thanks to the extremely positive reception we plan to host it every year. Everyone is welcome, from kids to medical students. Read about it here: |
“There might be a bit of gore” we were told, teetering on the high steppes of the Anatomy Lecture Theatre. In a live simulated brain surgery on Monday evening, a captivated audience watched as medical students carved into a fake skull, projected onto a large screen. After a video of a skiing accident made by someone who had clearly never been skiing before, I found myself weirdly interested in something I would normally avoid like, well, brain surgery.
